So maybe you came here expecting to find a Sennheiser 416 and thought, darn, I really need a 416. Well, don’t get disheartened, because while we have no quarrel with the iconic 416, the 418s features some of the same features with the added benefit of being a stereo mid side microphone. It works either as a MONO boom mic with an EQ characteristic very similar to the 416, or as part of an MS coincidental arrangement with the second bidirectional mic housed inside. Best of both worlds. Might even capture for LCR applications. We love the versatility of this mic, and the housing proves more robust than the 416 as well. Our 418S rents with a Rycote windshell and optional furry. The specialty stereo cable is provided and a boom can be added to the order.
From the manufacturer’s website “The MKH 418 S is an M-S stereo shotgun microphone using Sennheiser’s exclusive RF condenser technology. Its M-S format, compact dimensions, very good clarity and good spatial representation make it ideally suited for every type of application in film, radio, television and reporting, both indoors and outdoors.
